The community of .org domain names has now hit the seven million mark which now makes it the third most popular domain after .com & .net.
The .org domain has grow 20% year on year since the Public Interest Registry assumed management in 2003, since then there has been over an 250% increase in .org registrations. This is credited to the growth of social networking, support and issue awareness such as the growing number of for profit organizations who use .org addresses to highlight their service missions, increasing number of wikis for collaborative content, bloggers who want to start their own sites to reach a larger audience and also the growth of green and political organisations.
Although the .org domain was and is aimed at non profit organisations it seems that the for-profit organisations are now looking at the .org domain as an option as anyone can buy a .org domain.
